Welcome to the Aleza Lake Research Forest

The staff at ALRF are very excited about this new opportunity to share and connect with people out there who are interested in the same forest management and conservation topics as we are. Our industry, our research, our approach to education are evolving all the time and each day we spend at our forest presents new knowledge, new challenges and new questions. In this space we hope to share the broad range of activities that occupy our time in managing a small scale forestry operation for research and education.

About

The Aleza Lake Research Forest is a 9,000 hectare forested area on public land in Prince George, British Columbia, Canada. It is managed by the Aleza Lake Research Forest Society, a non-profit organization with a mandate to manage the Forest for research, education and demonstration. The Society is self-funded, mostly through small-scale timber harvesting. We also pursue external funding through grant applications and donations.

The Society is administered by a 7 member board of directors from the University of Northern British Columbia, University of British Columbia with provincial government and local industry partners. The Society employs four permanent staff including professional foresters to manage the land area, and staff to deliver research, education and outreach programs.

History

The area that is now known as Aleza Lake Research Forest was the original site of the Aleza Lake Forest Reserve, established in 1924 by the British Columbia Forests and Lands. The location chosen for this site was directly adjacent to Grand Trunk Railway, which was built a decade earlier through central interior British Columbia. An Experiment Station was built on the forest reserve to support research on the spruce/sub-alpine fir forests of the region. Immediately, trials were established to monitor key forest management indicators of the day: tree growth and timber yeild. Experiments for 4 decades after it's establishment primarily focused on harvesting and silviculture techniques that would promote the regeneration of spruce. In 1963, the BC Forest Service removed the station and by the 1980s the area was integrated into the broader timber supply area.

The 1990s saw a revived interest in the old reserve area as several of the original trials were protected and measured over the years. A key group of local government, university and private sector employees formed the Aleza Lake Research Forest Committee. This committe recommended that the area become a university research forest managed for research and education. Consequently, the University of British Columbia and the University of Northern British Columbia submitted a joint proposal to BC's Chief Forester to take over tenure to the forest resource at the site. Ultimately, the Aleza Lake Research Forest Society was formed and forest tenure granted in 2001.
